Windows Media Player doesn't play most of avi files

I have DivX 5.2 codecs installed but WMP not playing most of avi files and give me a msg:
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.”
I tried to install some different codec packages. Same problem.
I have VLC and Nero Show Time players installed as well. Both of them
work perfectly well. I understand they have their own codecs.
My problem is: WMP doesn't recognize any codec I try to install.

Actually Nero Showtime uses dshow filters, same as wmp and Nero's filters should work fine in wmp.
