I think the Philips DVp642 is a magnificent player but I noticed on two occassions when I was manipulating the remote buttons either fast forward or reverse..then when I hit play, the player shut down and when into satnd by (off mode). The first time it happened, I thought that I might had accidentally hit the power button, but the second time I was sure it happened on its own.
Has anyone experienced this and would you suggest I exchange it for another dvp642??

I have not experienced this with either of my 642's over the past 6 months. It sounds like a candidate for a quick exchange for another.

It's possible that your player is overheating. Make sure it has plenty of breathing room and I wouldn't put anything over or under it (e.g. VCR).
