Hardware problem: DVD data was there, then it vanished.

Just had something weird happen with a DVD-R. I burned about 3.7 GB of data to it in several sessions over the last few weeks. Last time I looked all the data was there. Then when I went to get a file a few days ago, about 90% of the data was missing. I cried, I screamed, I MagicISO'd and tried a bunch of other data rescue apps - all to no avail. The data was gone.

My burner is the primary master. On a whim I disconnected an empty secondary master drive bay from this chain, gave the IDE cable plug and socket for the burner a good spray with Cramolin de-oxidizer, rebooted and voila...my data was all back again! I've never seen this sort of behaviour before.

I was beginning to find myself in the perilous position of not trusting my burner, the media etc. Needless to say I'm relieved.

Just wanted to pass this on.

I see what you're saying but I'm not sure that in this instance it applies.
What makes you so certain it is one of the TWO things you mention?

Process of elimination. There's nothing else it could be. UNLESS you just have the wrong disc, or you really didn't burn the data like you thought.
