Philips DVP 642 - picture looking blue

So I really want to love this Philips DVP 642 I bought, but I keep getting these problems with it not playing the files I really want it to. I discovered the system menu trick for swirling colors in avi's last night so half of my issues are cleared up, but now I have another problem...
Tony Soprano is blue. Let me explain. I have season one of the Sopranos in avi format. When I play that dvd in the DVP 642, the sound is fine, it is synched with the picture just fine, but everything is in shades of blue. Tony Soprano looks like Varuka Salt from Willy Wonka! I have experienced the same issue with seasons 1 and 2 of the family guy. Also .avi files, only 2 of the episodes are not blue. I guess that it is a file/codec issue. I have a mac so I cant run gspot to find out the exact codec being used. Has anyone else encountered this? Any ideas? I appreciate any help available! I should also add that this isnt happening to all my files. Most everything plays great. I have it hooked up to my tv with rca cables. I tried the system menu multi ntsc switch to no avail. Perhaps I am doing it wrong?

I havent tried different sets of cables. I will give that a shot but am 99.999% sure that is not the problem because it doesnt do that with everything played in it. Anyone have detailed instructions on the multi /ntsc switch? (I know I know, how hard can it be, but when I see peoples posts saying that this trick works for them everytime and it doesnt clear up my blue issue, I tend to think Im doing it wrong)

and yes, mr. walnut's hair looks like he has a bad dye job.

Check your video output selection. I had mine go blue when I was outputting to component and I had the Philips set to S-video.

Is the Video PAL? Or NTSC?

actually, Im not sure.I got these from the interweb. how can I tell. Keep in mind that I have a mac. Unfortunately I cannot use a bunch of the apps listed on this site.

Maybe gspot? But I'm not sure it works on a Mac.
What did you mean by this "multi /ntsc switch" there is a remote hack to set the Region , you can also set the player to Pal.

I found this in another posting:

go to the system menu,/video options/tv standard, and then switch between multi and ntsc,

each time you get that red and blue sceen, try this, has worked for me every time for some reason

Yeah, gspot wont work on my mac. Ill try setting it to pal.

nah, I can set it to multi, ntsc or pal on the system menu of the DVP 642 and the result is the same, blue with red highlights. crap.

I had the same problem as chas0039 when I first got mine, switching the output from S-video to component fixed the blue problem for me.
