I want to use the HDMI output for video on the Denon 3910, but use an optical output for audio. The instructions manual is not too helpful, but it seems to suggest that if you use HDMI, the audio will come out thru audio outputs including optical as only 2 channel. Any suggestions/experiences?

Regardless of which Video output you use, the optical outputs will be true to the source.

HDMI is great for both audio & video if your receiver has HDMI input. If only the TV has HDMI (or DVI, then need adapter) then connect HDMI to TV for video and optical from player to receiver for audio.
