I transferred the files from the 8cm DVDs onto my laptop so I can edit them and send home movies to my family in Spain. I can get the whole movie on to a standard DVD fine, with the menu that the DVD camcorder produces, but there are loads of things that I want to cut so I can send just the highlights out to my family.

However, I can't figure out for the life of me how to do it!

The files are now stored as VOB, BUP and IFO files like you would get in a normal DVD. But how do I edit these and burn them onto DVD? If anyone could point in the right direction of some software, then I'm pretty sure I could figure out the rest!!

Thanks to anyone wonderful person who can help me!!!

  2. Yeah those camcorders that record right onto a DVD sound like a great idea, but now you know what the drawbacks are. If your camcorder has an firewire port your in luck. Connect that port to your computer and play back the video while capturing as an AVI file with WinDV, that way can edit the video with any standard editing program. Good luck

  3. Here's a possible solution that does not involve re-capturing as AVI (which will mean that you will have to re-encode and degrade the image quality).

You're in the same situation as people who record with DVD Recorders and then edit that material and re-author it. I'm assuming you can get those small DVD discs to play in a computer DVD Rom drive. So look for the guides on editing material recorded on DVD Recorders and it should work the same way. Lots of details to learn but basically, you would rip your video titles with DVD Shrink or DVD Decryptor. Then use MpegVCR to edit the VOB file. Then use an DVD authoring program to create a new DVD.

Mpegvcr or the other Womble product Mpeg Video Wizard will accept the vob's and do some nice editing, outputting an mpeg that will need to be authored to create a new dvd.

If you just want to do simple editing like cutting out scenes, then TMPGEnc DVD Author will take the video as-is ("add dvd video") and let you edit, create simple menus then output to dvd.

    Trial versions available for both.
