  1. Just wondering if there is an easy way to capture recorded tv shows directly to a compressed xvid AVI file. Or do I have to record to MPG and then convert? What I basically want to do is be able to record shows that are the same size and quality as the ones that I have downloaded (eg. lost.s01e04.hdtv-lol.avi). Sorry if there are already many posts about this, if there are just point me in their direction or to a guide. Thanks in advance

Doubt that you are going to be able to do this without serious drop frame issues. xvid is not that fast and would require a lot of horsepower to accomplish in real time. Maybe someone more familiar with xvid can chime in as I rarely use it.

You can capture with xvid with no frames dropped using about 20% with my type of cpu but the only thing is will need to capture at a decent bitrate or the picture will look like crap.

If you capture at the file size you want the bitrate needed will have to be low and the resulting quality will awful.Best to capture at a high bitrate and then re-encode to xvid.
Ben Johnson-I didnt take any stereos!
