This is my first time try to make one of these. Basically what I want to do is record movies/shows/games from my dish network to a HD to view later or record to DVD.

Can someone show me what hardware I need to do just this? I dont need extras like radio tuner, etc. Just need to record to HD for later view or I also would like to burn directly to DVDR if it's possible.

Hauppauge PVRs or AverMedia PVRs can do this. If you're building from scratch make it easier on yourself and get a copy of XP MCE 2005 so you don't have to use the manufacturer's clunky applications. Or if you're familar with Linux give MythTV a try on FC2.
