I had been operating virtualdubmod with no problem until
a few days ago. Now it won't start. I had been trying to
convert a matroska file last I believe with the vp6 vfw
codec. I tried opening the file with an avisynth script. I
don't think I intalled any new codecs or programs, or
changed anything at all between the last time the
program worked and the first time it failed.
I tried opening within cmd to see if there was any
indication of some failure but there's just a blank line and
then a return to the prompt.
I tried deleting the folder with the program and re-
extracting it. It didn't work. I tried deleting the folder
and deleting any registry entries I could find, then re-
extracting virtualdubmod. All that did was give me the
initial GNU licence screen, and then continue to fail as
before (not run). I tried the above with Virtualdubmod
1.5.4.1 and it still won't run.
I've checked my pc for spyware, adware, viruses. I'm
    clean. Have run registry cleaner.
    Virtualdub works fine.
    Virtualdubmpeg2 works fine.

I saved a crashinfo file from the first folder I had. The
crash happened a few days (i think) before the program
stoped working for me, so I don't think it's of much value
but I shall include it anyway.
Searched for required dll file pack. None available.
But was using 1.5.10.1 that said "all inclusive". Have
    also tried latest bugfix build.

    Op sys WinXP sp2

    Thanks in advance

Is it only the one file, or any file?
    Hello.

  3. The registry entries are different than for VirtualDub. Did you delete the correct one?

    REGEDIT4

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Freeware\VirtualDubMod]
I've actually locked it up so bad it wouldn't restart.

Consider this a reset switch. VDubMod should act as if it has never been run on your system after you delete its registry entry.

The program won't start at all. The gui never pops up to even try and open a file.

Yes I am sure I deleted the correct registry entry.
It does act as though it never was on the pc. It loads the GNU public release license acceptance screen, however it then again continues on to 'fail'.
By fail I mean the program just doesn't start running. There is no error report or anything.

I also can't use avs files anywhere. That's stopped working too. CCE was buggy about it but TMPG would take them. Now not even a simple Avisource("c:\vcd\whatever.avi) avs file will open in any program. Tried reinstalling (diff ver too).

It's starting to be a real pain.
    Can I avoid a format?

  5. It's starting to sound like "Video-For-Windows" support is broken on your machine.

    Will DirectShowSource() work?

No it doesn't. Nor does MPEGSource or any of the example scripts that are in the example folder of avisynth.
When trying to open .avs files with CCE it says "AviFileInfo: error 0x80004005"
and with TMPG "cannot open or unsupported"

What is "Video-for-Windows" and how is it fixed?

Might also want to try emptying your AVISynth plugin directory. See if that helps.

Thank you Gastorgrab, Thank you Celtic Druid.

When looking in the plugins directory I saw the AddAudio.avsi I'd created and forgoten about. Removing it fixed my problems. Had a look at it and found I'd had a ) instead of a } at the end of the script. Replaced and all is fine.

I understand the avs scripts not running but a whole independent program being crippled...
It's strange that Virtualdubmod wouldn't run cause of that!
Especially as other versions of virtualdub worked.
    Why so?

    Is Video-for-windows (vfw) a win98 thing?

    Thanks again guys

    Independent program?

Other versions of VDub don't integrate with AVISynth like VdubMod does and .avsi means that it is autoloaded so when VDubMod is run it is processed.

No VFW is for all versions of windows. Although it is becoming less and less relivant as directshow takes over for encoding/editing.
