  1. Can any Pioneer DVR 520 owners tell how the above mentioned DVR behaves when encoding action sequences. It is usually at this stage that interlacing is mostly moticable. Is the image stable and clear ? Or is it blurred in order to hide interlacing problems ?

Any help would be appreciated because I intend to go for it in the not too distant future.

I have the DVR-510 and have used it to copy several of my laserdiscs to DVD as well as from my Comcast cable box. I have yet to see any interlacing problems during action scenes. This is true even for letterboxed action movies that aren't anamorphic.

The only interlacing problem -- or more accurately a field dominance problem -- that I've seen is when I ripped a commercial TV show video DVD on my Mac and then converted that to DV. I wanted to test sending a DV movie through Firewire to the Pioneer. The result was a jerky mess whenever there was movement. I since have experimented with a different DV source (from a movie DVD rather than a TV show DVD -- film instead of video) that did not have this problem.

My Pioneer is connected to a 32" Sony digital XBR TV via component inputs so I should be able to see clearly any serious picture quality problems. My opinion is the picture looks terrific. I see no difference between the DVD copy and the laserdisc original when encoded at up to the 2-hour mode. In fact, I've used the Pioneer's custom video settings to improve the color and sharpness of some of my more poor-looking laserdiscs.
