  1. My DVD player will play DivX files but not xvid, so sometimes I put a CD/DVD with an AVI file on it in my DVD player only to find that it is an xvid and will not play.

Is there any tool or some way to easily tell whether it is DivX/xvid before burning?

Load it into Gspot, and it will tell you if the video codec is divx or xvid.

That said, you might be succesful with changing the "identifier" in the AVI from XviD to DivX (using the fourcc changer) - they are similar enough to be decodable by the same decoder, if no special XviD feature was used when it was encoded.
