Dropping frames during capturing

Something strange is happening. When capturing DV from camcoder using either Adobe Premier or Movie Maker lots of frames are dropped to the point where the resulting video is unwatchable. However when capturing the exact same tape on other computer it is fine. Can anyone help me out. The easy solution, of course, is to capture on 2nd computer, however, all my programs are installed on 1st computer, which is faster.

WinDV to capture.
A "faster" computer will not be "faster" if it's full of background programs running.

What you need is a "CLEAN" computer.
When was the last time you scanned the computer for spyware or viruses?
What programs are you running in the background?
A normal windows system will have between 20 and 25 processes running at any given time. Any more is unnecessary.

Not sure if this is what your problem is
but it might help...........

1. Enable DMA
2. Defrag
3. Don't multi-task

I would try what lordsmurf suggested and use WinDV. One possibility is that you have set something different in your other capture programs such that you are actually encoding the DV data instead of just transferring it to your hard drive.

Has you opened task manager to see how much of the system resources are being used during the data transfer? My P4 2.53 is usually less than 10% cpu usage during transfer.

I used WinDV on my 2nd computer and capturing went flawlessly. I wonder however if the same problem that creates frame dropping on my 1st computer causes lag of video from sound when encoding DVD's into DivX. Original DVD plays just fine. I have tons of games/programs installed on my 1st computer but they do not reside in memory when I do encoding. I used one button fix in Norton Systemworks and found minor problems in the registry.

What program would you suggest I run to fix my computer or clean memory.
