"Introducing DVDirect (DVD Direct), the world's first hybrid DVD recorder capable of burning DVDs with or without a Computer.
Quickly and easily preserve home movies from tapes directly onto DVD in DVD Direct's stand-alone operation mode. DVD Direct can record on standard 4.7GB or Double Layer 8.5GB discs for up to 12 hours of video storage on a single disc. Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons.

  6. No FireWire input for DV dubbing - seems like a strange omission for a Sony product.

  7. Sounds like a regular dvd recorder to me.

Can only imagine the quality at 12hours.

12 hours quality will be the same as 6 hours on current standalone DVD recorders, but on a Dual Layer disk. Expect more standalone devices supporting dual layer to appear soon.

So it is a standard external, USB2 connected DVD burner with the addition of analog inputs and a bulit-in mpeg encoder for analog sources.

No tuner by the looks of it, or timer for that matter.

  10. The picture appears to have a firewire port on the front. Plus this quote "• Can even be connected to computer for high speed DVD burning/copying " certainly implies firewire or USB 2. Since it's from Sony I'd presume the first one.

@LordSmurf, yeah it's hype, but it is also showing that DVD burning is/has gone main stream. Both a very good and possibly a bad thing.

I'd still be happier with a mini-DV tape deck in the same price range (or lower since it would just be a camcorder without the camera). edit ....with a tuner and a timer, thanks for the reminder Bugster.

As a ps they do show DL media under $10 a pop.

Silly me. I just naturally assumed that when I read the following article saying the technology would be released this month that it was a "new thing."

And here it was ... discussed way back in October last year.
Reporter: Mr. Hitchcock, is it true you said that actors are like cattle?

Alfred Hitchcock: I said no such thing. I said that actors should be treated like cattle.
