Anyone using VLC media player?

My first post...hope I am posting in the right section.

I know it is tricky to fool around with codes, yet I really want to watch those movie files which filled up most of my disk space...

Friend of mine recommended me VC media player. With a little research at Google Groups, I found this program has exactly what I am looking for.

VLC's great advantage is that it
plays just about every type of file out-of-box - no codecs required to
install as it has a large library of it's own decoding dll's.

VLC is also an invaluable tool to preview video that hasn't fully downloaded
off emule or other p2p programs.

I wonder if anyone how actually is using VCL shed more lights on its usefulness and reliability. Thanks.

I use it all the time. Mostly for checking downloads of video files. It's a simple player without a lot of features, but great for checking odd format video files. It will play most formats without installing codecs.

I would recommend a copy of AVIcodec or Gspot to see what codecs you need, then just download those. I stay away from the codec packs as they can cause problems. As far as reliability, if it can't play the file, it doesn't do anything. Never crashed or locked up in my use.

Excellent, use it all the time. Plays All movies from DIVX to SVCD to DVD.

plays ISO files and sometimes can open up a rar file and play that.

Big thanks for all the reassurences and suggestions given. I will get VLC installed now.

Btw, would it be the best combination - using BSPlayer whatever possible and using VCL for files BSPlayer can't handle?

I never really got into vlc player for whatever reason, maybe because all the codecs I needed I installed. Anyway, another good media player is Media Player Classic. Its good for quickly checking movies over, for instance I had an mpeg that I had captured and wanted to make sure that it looked okay quickly, so I opened it up. The default was RealOne Player, and it opened and then just froze. I think it took like 5 minutes to finally open my file. I then tried Media Player Classic and it opened it within 3 secs, no questions asked!
