What hardware do I need to capture from VHS?

What hardware do I need to capture from VHS?
From what I understand...
I need a capturing device...

And a scart socket connector/convertor to SVideo.

And that's all I need?
(Anything else?)

I'm confused, because there seems to be a plethora of hardware available!

Am I OK to get by using something as simple as the lowest Hauppauge TV cards?
Or do I need something of a higher spec?
(Do the higher spec TV cards come with extra hardware tha make them better because they can convert to MPG on the fly?)

And what about these other hardware devices that say that they are just for converting from VHS to digital?
Would these hardware be better than a TV card??

I've tried searching this website and google... but am still int he dark.

ANy help would be appreciated.

How much do you want to spend? Obvously the more you spend the better the results that you can expect.

Personally I use a DVD recorder.

Personally, if you are going the PC approach, then I would go with an ADVC-100 or an ATI AIW Radeon card.

If you don't want to capture to the PC, go with a DVD-Recorder.


Either weay you go, you might also need a TBC(time base corrector) depending on the age of the VHS tape and if the A/V sync is off.

Do a forum search on these topics/items and you'll find others have been going through the same dilemma.

1gb of RD-RAM? You might want to change that recommendation, RD-RAM has been outdated for well over a year...

I have the same question also.

I have a fairly new machine (P4 3.2, 9700 PRO, and 1 GIG DDR Ram)

I need to capture video from my VHS VCR and possible from my DVD player onto my computer. I want the target file on my computer to be in mpg or mpeg format, and about 600 megs or so in size. (So they can fit on a single CD-R)

Any suggestions? Budget isnt all that high. Im not looking to create professional video clips, because the source media isnt perfect.

Id rather buy a capture card than a new All In Wonder Video Card.
Any suggestions?

I use the ASUS TV/Capture card to capture files from Hi-8 and VHS with good results. PowerVCR is bundled with it and you can customize the profile to make it fit - I can capture an hour in about 640 meg at VCD rates. The sync problem with PowerVCR is now easily corrected with the VideoRedo editor. Or you could use WinDVR to capture.
