Cheap or expensive media against cheap DVD player

I have been burning DVD's for a while and have tried a few formats of DVD media. I have used Datasafe and Bulkpac.

Just a simple question

I have a cheap DVD player and want to backup with cheap media. However, you get what you pay for! Can someone recommend the best media around without spending too much money! I simply want to 'backup' my DVD's, but have been having playback trouble. ie pixel breaking up etc......

I could spend weeks looking through this forum.

Search for the media that burn well in your recorder (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters) and crosscheck them with the media that play well in your DVD player (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers).

Then you should have an answer.

Having a cheap player probably means using good media is even more important than with a top-quality player. Yes, you get what you pay for.

Cheaper players might not have the quality control on things like laser power, focus, spindle wow and flutter, heat removal, etc. This means you are probably better off removing the one big variable you do have control over - media quality.

All media is pretty reasonable nowadays. You can get top-grade 8X Taiyo Yuden media for 65 cents each (Rima). True you can get the cheapo stuff for 20 or 30 cents, but is it really worth it to save a few bucks on a spindle if you're going to be getting freezing, stuttering, data read error blockiness, etc? Assuming you get a good burn, which isn't a foregone conclusion with the ultra-cheap media like Princo and CMC.

I had a few brands that I had to burn at lower speed to get perfect burns (Princo, Sky, etc..).

Apart from that they were OK.

I bought a cheap player last year and it turned out to be less picky than my expensive Philips!

Regarding the cheap media compatibility question, u should get some media from several brands to see which one works on ur player.

Exactly what I did, got a spindle of dvds that I know worked for me and kinda traded them around for other blanks with friends / family. No major loss and I was kinda able to judge what worked, what worked better or worse, didnt work at all without having a spindle or cake of duds.
