What the hell is wrong with windows xp pro?

I am trying to install this friggin thing and it keeps giving me an error "improper function" "D:\i386\asms". Fatal error.



Anyone know why this keeps happening? I tried to upgrade 2000, this happened and failed to allow me to use the 2000 install anymore, so I formatted and tried a clean install, same problem.

So I took a different install disc and tried it, same error. Something is up here me thinks. LOL

Search is your friend... and I thought this to be the problem...
Maybe a "copy" of an XP disc??

I suggest you check your "original" disc...

Well, heres the thing, I had to burn them because Penn state has a deal with MS called MSDNAA and you download an ISO from them of software and burn it yourself.

And this happens on 2 different cds, burned from 2 diff images.

I find "2" different discs being scratched hard to believe.....
Out of all the discs I have laying around, I must be lucky....

Thats whats driving me nuts, I can see 1 scratched disc, even though it was burned today, it CAN happen. So I pull out a second xp pro disc and it does it again, same error. I thought maybe just the upgrade had screwed the pooch so I formatted and did a clean install, and yet again it bounced it.

It is not hard to believe. If you do not take care of your discs or if the discs get heavy use, then it is very easy to be scratched.

I dont know. I downloaded the ISO from the site used for pennstate and MS to distro their software so I would HOPE that they know how to make an ISO. And I have never had trouble burning an ISO. And the other install cd I have is from an entirely different ISO file so they couldnt be from the same source. So I am totally at a loss at to the answers LOL I think my machine just plain old doesnt like XP.

I finally got it in. The trouble was with it trying to install on a fat32 drive. I set it to install with an NTFS filesystem and it worked like a charm. Very weird.
