Mpeg to Mpeg conversions ( Newbie Questions ) :~(

I have an mpeg file with the following specs that I wish to convert to SVCD PAL

352x240 frame size
29.970 fps
1149 average bitrate

I have a few newbie questions that I hope you may be able to help me with.

Can I use TMPGenc ( Ver 2.5 ) to do all the conversion for me or would it be best to do some pre-conversion with other software prior to encoding with TMPGenc ?

I realise this is an NTSC frame rate and I have read that converting it to PAL will give me a jerky picture. My DVD players can play either PAL or NTSC so would it be best to keep it in the NTSC format ?

Is it just the frame rate, bit size and frame size that stops an Mpeg movie file being able to play as an VCD/SVCD or have I over simplified matters ? There seems to be so many mpeg files out there, yet 99% still have to be converted for use as an SVCD. can anyone explain in newbie terms why that is ?

Hello,

If you can play ntsc I would suggest keeping it ntsc. If you change it you can introduce synch problems. The best way would be to make a ntsc svcd (normal procedures) and use a rewritable disc. Then if its out of synch you may have to make it a pal format. Just do a forum search for "ntsc to pal" and you'll find plenty of references.

This seems very much like a NTSC VCD file, so if your player can play VCD, then the conversion to SVCD is pointless - just author & burn it as NTSC VCD instead. Only thing that will happen if you reencode to SVCD standard is a decrease in quality, and twice the # of CDs...

matts right, that's a vcd, you won't gain anyhting by converting it to svcd
