I am thinking of getting the LiteOn 5005 recorder. I have occasion to need 2 to 3 hours to record tv movies that I like. This, and many other recorders do not allow you to control the time, except in 1,2, 4 and 6 hour chunks. I do not want to hack this machine for 3 hours, yet I see no others that offer all it does at its price. The JVC may be a good machine, but it is too limited for my taste. Any ohter suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Also, how good is the 4 hour quality vs VCR 4 hour quality (Panasonic).

JVC limited? How. The LiteON in 4-hour is nice, but nowhere near as good as JVC.

The LiteOn records all formats. From what I heard about JVC, it will not play DVD+R's. If it were to replace my dvd player, it must play all formats as I recieve discs from various sources. I know its quality is somewhat better than the 5005. Fortunately, I have another recorder to play DVD +R's, so that's is not a problem.
Please, explain to me the "FR" mode and what it can do? If I can record to a more narrower time interval, that will improve quality over four hour mode and give me what I really want. I need to record to between 2 - 3 hours on many projects.

    Thank you for your reply

FR mode, you set length to record for full disc.
It plays DVD+R fine, if you do it right (no junk discs, authored good, etc)
