displaying ".sub" captions with avi's using Wmplay

hi all, how can i display captions using windows media player9 for an
avi that has a "*.SUB" file as a captions file, the film is in Xvid mpeg4
codec and it is running smoothly but without the caption, i tried :
Play>Captions and Subtitles> On if available (checked) ....but nothing
is displayed, the .sub caption file has the same avi's name and is in the
same directory...so what's wrong? what does it take to display it? is it a codec problem? or is it a GFX Card problem?
my system is:
P4 , 1GB DDram, Quadro 900 XGL video Card
WinXP pro, Wmplyer9, DivX player2.5.1, real player 10, QuickTime 6.5.1
