I saw 50 PACK SPINDLES of MAXELL DVD-R that said "MADE IN TAIWAN"at OFFICE DEPOT. I wonder if they're following other manufacturers and outsourcing their dvd media to TAIWAN like how TDK has done. I guess we all need to stock up on MAXELL DVD-R. Although the 15 & 25 pack spindles I saw are still made in JAPAN.

I'll have to check because I could have sworn the disc's were yellow topped & not blue. I could be wrong so I'll take a look tomorrow.

    I have both the - and the +;

    - yellow tops, media code TY, made in Japan
+ blue tops, media code Rico, made in Twai

Did the packaging appear to be the same as the 15's and 25's?:

You musta looked at the DVD+R media. Those are Ricohjpn's made in Taiwan. Or they are an old batch of 2x DVD-R media (as opposed to the 1-4x).

I just about use Maxell exclusively and have only found MXL and TY id's that are made in Japan. I use printables and yellow tops. I'll be an unhappy camper if this is true.

Well most of you won't like what I saw at OFFICE DEPOT. The 50 pack spindles of DVD-R are YELLOW TOPS and it says MADE IN TAIWAN. I just got back from there and I should've used my camera phone to take a snap shot of the spindle. I'll take a snapshot of it tomorrow. Anyways I'm at work so gotta run.

P.S. The spindle is DVD-R not DVD+R. I know that for sure as I've stated I'll take a snapshot of the spindle tomorrow.

Ok folks I took some snap shots of the 50 pack spindle of MAXELL DVD-R 4x speed that I saw at my local OFFICE DEPOT store.

As you can see the made in taiwan picture isn't too clear but it does say "MADE IN TAIWAN". I used my sprint camera phone to take the pictures. I wonder what the media code is??????? Acks!!! I hope Maxell isn't going to manufacturing their DVD-R media in Taiwan from now on!

I guess I can be the guinea pig and buy it to find out what the media code is then return it. It retails for $69.99 if I'm not mistaken. It's not listed on their website. I'll go purchase the spindle this weekend and give all of you the update. Anyone wanna bet what the media code ID will be?

I'm guessing "RIPOFF" will be the MEDIA CODE ID

BTW as of this Sunday July 25, 2004 Staples will have 15 packs of Maxell DVD-R and Maxell DVD+R for only $11.94 and I plan to buy 3 or 4 packs but I sure hope the 4x DVD-R packages I intend to buy say MADE IN JAPAN or screw it ... back to Taiyo Yuden from RIMA.COM

I wonder if they'll actually be TAIYO YUDEN or MXLRGO1 or MXLRG02? Or a fake brand?

I'll purchase a spindle since I have a $20.00 off coupon from OFFICE DEPOT. I gotta spend $100.00 or more to get the discount. I purchased last Sunday the buy one MAXELL DVD-R 25 pack spindle get one free but I forgot to give them my OFFICE ADVANTAGE CARD. I tried to get the cashier to fix it today but she didn't know what the heck she was doing and I was in a rush. She credited my charge card then rang it up again but couldn't get the OFFICE ADVANTAGE number to be input. So I figure I'll have them credit my charge card again then repurchase it so I can get the OFFICE ADVANTAGE points, and then buy the 50 pack spindle that would bring the subtotal to $111.62. minus the $20.00 coupon the total will be $91.62. If I actually keep all 100 discs it comes out to about 91 cents each. Dunno if I would keep the 50 pack spindle should the media not be TAIYO YUDEN or MXLR.

You all must be wondering why I haven't posted the MEDIA CODE yet. For the last 2 days I've been hunting all over my home for that $20.00 OFFICE DEPOT COUPON. Apparently someone was clean happy and threw it away by mistake. I'll be buying the spindle tomorrow and post the media code.

Yes there it is folks RITEK G04! Well I'll be returning this spindle back to OFFICE DEPOT tomorrow. I had to pay regular price for the spindle which was ummmm $83.00. I'm not keeping it for that price!

I guess the rule of thumb now will be to only purchase MAXELL DVD-R if it says MADE IN JAPAN. If I could get a small bundle of these and if it was on sale I'd buy just to see how the burns would be and if there would be any errors as well as playing back on my standalone dvd players. I guess slowly all the companies will be outsourcing their dvd media manufacturing to TAIWAN & SINGAPORE. Go figure!!

Seriously though, I can't help but wonder what's going on in the minds of the powers that be. Do they actually believe no one notices such things as country of origin and/or media codes? Do they really think they can sell Riteks for the same price as MXLs and TYs?????

I guess labor is cheap in TAIWAN & SINGAPORE....I'm not surprised they are outsourcing their dvd media manufacturing.

They seem to wanna try passing them off as MXL & TY....in another thread someone mentioned purchasing 25 pack spindles but saw MADE IN TAIWAN so they didn't purchase those.

I've had no problems in returning dvd media to office depot or at compusa. It won't be the first time I've returned dvd media to office depot!!!

  24. Man this really sad news. For now I am only sticking to anything made in Japan or those Verbatim MCC which are made in tawian. I don't want to ask dumb questions but did u check more than 1 disk? I just can't believe they can put Ritek G04 (not even their 8X model) at that price. You said $83 for 50 pack. So $1.66 a disk for Riteks!! Biggest rip off I ever heard.

Any other disks not made in Japan considered 1st class media?

I bet it's final stock of supergrade being pushed out. Probably easy to do since Hitachi/Maxell has a contract with them, and they're already unable to fill their orders with TYG01, another media probably headed for the scrap heap. I'm seeing more 8x pop up these days.

And a couple months before that they were bashing Ritek.....it's cyclical. Lately, Ritek has been spotty in quality (which, in their history, has been more true than not).

Basically, you get what you pay for.....unless you pay for Maxell and get Ritek.....bastids.
