  1. Hi world,

I had purchased the Verbatim Digital Movie DVD-R(1X---4X) and boy have I been having issues with it!! I have burnt 4 coasters out of 5 so far. I have a Sony DRX 510UL and I have had a good burn with TDK,Sony, Fuji. My disc details:

    Manufacturer Mitsubishi
    Manufacturer ID: MCCX01RG20

I read that Verbatim are good brands, so I am rather surprised that all my discs are failing. Any suggestions as to what I can do to salvage this crap.

    Thanks.

"Sony" is likely the reason. Those burners are not the best, not even in the top 5.

    Likely a firmware issue.

I bought 4 25-packs of those when they were on sale, and out of 33 burns, no coasters and they play flawlessly. Burned to the hilt too.

I also bought a 25pk and havent had any problems yet. Gotta be the burner or software.

Sounds close to my experience with Taiwan made Verbatims. Though, no complete coasters, just less than perfect burns, when compared to Maxell and Taiyo Yuden. To top it off, these are more expensive ($11.88 for 5 not on sale) than both Maxell and Taiyo Yuden added together.

What exactly do you mean by coaster? Fails to finish the burn cycle, or the disc is completely unreadable after the burn cycle completes.

  7. These are also Taiwan made Verbatims. By coasters, I mean it fails to finish the burn cycle. Sometimes half way through, sometimes even less. I don't have any problems burning with Fuji, TDK or Sony media. As far as firmware goes, I think I have the latest one downloaded as well.

    Any ideas...

I don't think Sony makes their DVD recorders. They farm out production and the drive could made by anybody. I think I would avoid Sony recorders.

Agreed, everyone else that has no problems w/ these discs do not own a sony. I have burned almost 50 of these w/ no probs on my NEC.

Currently, Sony drives are rebadged lite-ons. But when Sony initially introduced dual writer drives they were built in house. I think they did this for the first two versions. I know the 500s were, and maybe the 510s were too, don't remember.
    Blah, blah, blah

That looks like one of 3 things.

Junk on the DVD. Make sure there aren't any spots, dust so on.... on the disc. If the laser encounters this while burning, it will error out.

DVD Burner. An updated firmware could help. But this is MCC Verbatim media. Verbatim, Maxell, and Taiyo Yuden are usually used when testing beta firmware, so production firmware should be good to go, but you never know.

PC. Check Power Supply, RAM, and Hard Drive. Though, if your RAM had errors, or a weak power supply, you would have a random rebooting problems. So unless that is true, could not be the problem. Check you HD for errors and run a disk defragger.

The early Sony drives were made by Sony, and yes they do suck for the most part there are more compliants about coasters, and PCEs with these drives than any other.

Since you have good luck with other media, there is no need to fix what isn't broke
