Whats the best (preferabally free) antivirus software out there. I'll pay for it if I have to, but almost all the money I've made this summer has either gone towards tuition or in the bank so I'm currently broke. Thanks

Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

I have never had problems with Norton. It can't suck that bad. Mcafee is pretty good too. I used to use Mcafee, then switched to Norton.

Just because you had problems, does not make the program suck. There are a lot of people out there that use it and have never had problems.

  12. Anyone try Avast! free product? Seem to find a lot of stuff the Trend's House Call, NAV and AntiVir did not find -- Trojans mainly. I just can't get a handle on whether it is really that good or whether it is just a lot of false positives.

If Avast! is returning errors, what do y'all think of AntiVir? I want a free one and did not particularly like AVG's interface. I really want something that will auto-update without user intervention.

    Thanks !!

AVG can be set to update automatically although you need to click OK after the updates are installed in the background....I use NORTON, AVG & the free TRENDMICRO HOUSE CALL FREE SCAN. NORTON's has a habit of not finding TROJAN viruses. I tried the TRENDMICRO SUITE but it can't be installed if you have NORTON's or ZONE ALARM. I had to uninstall the 2 programs. It worked ok but I couldn't get their firewall configured so I couldn't get my outlook express to work....I'll probably try the demo again to try to configure the firewall settings.....A 5 license user is only $125.00.

NOD32, just installed it one PC, now I'm decided about which to use on all.

Avast! recently failed the Virus Bulletin Test...
I tried AntiVir, didn't ever find any viruses, which worried me.

Here you can see the history of some AVs : http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/tests.xml?200406

Having multiple recent test with a passing score is a good sign for an AV scanner...

I also hear good things about Kapersky and I currently use AVG, but it does miss viruses sometimes. It's not good for in the wild viruses... but very low resource usage.

I like NOD32, my dads pc was using norton antivirus corprate(my dads in army so he can download it for free). I deleted it though after it failed to stop a virus which replaced all windows media player. So I bought NOD32 after I read alot of good stuff about it. Ran a scan and found a trojan norton didn't even pick up.

I downloaded AVG free edition and ran it. It did its thing and moved the infected files to a virus vault. The problem now is that I think it removed exe files so I cant run simple programs like AIM. Is there any way to fix this mess?

Norton is not the problem. You need to configure it to provide maximum protection, instead of default protection. It also helps to always have the up-to date defenitions. They come out almost every day if you visit www.sarc.com and use intelligent updater.

Also common sense helps out. I get tired of people blaming Norton, when they did not have it configured right to begin with.
