Whats the best (preferabally free) antivirus software out there. I'll pay for it if I have to, but almost all the money I've made this summer has either gone towards tuition or in the bank so I'm currently broke. Thanks

Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they? -

Anyone try Avast! free product? Seem to find a lot of stuff the Trend's House Call, NAV and AntiVir did not find -- Trojans mainly. I just can't get a handle on whether it is really that good or whether it is just a lot of false positives.
If Avast! is returning errors, what do y'all think of AntiVir? I want a free one and did not particularly like AVG's interface. I really want something that will auto-update without user intervention.
Thanks !! -

I use McAfee cause it was free. Used to use Trend Pc-Cillin 2002 because it was free, but the liscense ran out.

NOD32, just installed it one PC, now I'm decided about which to use on all.
Avast! recently failed the Virus Bulletin Test...
I tried AntiVir, didn't ever find any viruses, which worried me.
Here you can see the history of some AVs : http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/tests.xml?200406
Having multiple recent test with a passing score is a good sign for an AV scanner...
I also hear good things about Kapersky and I currently use AVG, but it does miss viruses sometimes. It's not good for in the wild viruses... but very low resource usage. -
I like NOD32, my dads pc was using norton antivirus corprate(my dads in army so he can download it for free). I deleted it though after it failed to stop a virus which replaced all windows media player. So I bought NOD32 after I read alot of good stuff about it. Ran a scan and found a trojan norton didn't even pick up.

Yes ,you`re right, NOD 32 is good.
Never had a problem since I switched to NOD 32. -
I downloaded AVG free edition and ran it. It did its thing and moved the infected files to a virus vault. The problem now is that I think it removed exe files so I cant run simple programs like AIM. Is there any way to fix this mess?

Whatever.
I know a bunch of people that have never had problems with it.
And I have never had any problems with Norton Antivirus. -
Yep and at work they have it configured right and my boss still managed to get infected my beagle and spread all over her system. Norton realtime did nothing and alot of people at the army base I work at got infected too. They all run norton corprate.
