Newbie DVD Region Question

I have a Toshiba SD-1600. I can only assume it is region 1. I have read the info on this site on my model in the hardware database and I can see that there is no "software" way to make the player read other regions (though there is one mod kit out there)

However, my question is even more newb than that. I know that the player will not read region 2-6, but will it read region free (0) DVDs? The hardware database does not make this point clear and I am frankly without a clue.

The reason I ask is that I am interested in buying a DVD set of the original Star Wars trilogy off eBay and they are "region free"

Any help qould be appreciated.

If they are 'region free', how do you know they aren't low quality copies of the original? I may be wrong, but I am not aware of any 'region free' originals.

The Star Wars dvd's are not released until september so these on Ebay are best avoided.

@redwudz There's loads of region 0 dvd's, the vast majority of porn dvd's are region 0, according to my mate anyway.

FYI everyone, I own the widescreen VHS release from the early 90's and I am basically trying to archive them to DVD but getting poor results due to tape deterioration.

redwudz: I don't know about the quality but I am researching it.

steveryan: The DVDs coming in the fall are not the original versions but will rather be further enhanced Special Edition versions. I am looking for the originals.

I think I will be OK anyway. My player has no problem with the DVDs I have burned so far (with Nero Vision Express) and I assume they are region free, so I should be OK.

What's called "region free" is a DVD that can play in all regions, i.e. it has no region prohibitions. It will play just fine in your Toshiba.
If I were you, I wouldn't bother modifying the player. The whole idea of the region codes is to prevent poor us outside of region 1 from buying much cheaper DVDs released many months earlier in your region.
