Magnavox MDV458

Didn't see this player in the list so I was wondering if anyone had any experience with it (mostly wondering about (S)VCD and DVD -R and +R), and if the region free hacks for other magnavox players also work on this one. Thanks.

I've also seen this model listed as 45817 and 458/17. Still haven't found any info yet.

Yep,The Philips 642/17 Is a good Player.Go here for all the specs and downloads.

I also have the Magnavox 458/17 player.It it almost the same at the Phil 642,without the Divx.

Philips owns(makes) Magnavox so they are fairly equal in quality.

I got the 642 at Target for $70,and the Mag at Circuit City for $50.

The 642 is in demand ,so it's hard to find.

So you would say that the 458 can play pretty much everything the 642 can (sans divx, obviously)? And have you tried the magnavox region-free hack on the 458?

I'd say the Mag is as good as the Phil,except for the Divx.I haven't tried the region hack you mentioned.

I was curious about the region hack mainly because my friend is in the market for a decent quality yet inexpensive DVD player that's region free, as he is planning on bringing in some region 2 discs.

Edit: and also the fact that this player is not on the "list" makes me wonder if the region hack for other mag players also works on this one.

So is it safe to assume that the region cracks for the other Magnavox models will work on the 458? Has anyone tested this? I'm in the market to buy a new DVD player and this is my 1st choice at this time. If the region crack works, I'm buying it. I have heard some really good reviews for such an inexpensive unit. Please do advise.
