COMPAQ DVD-ROM SD-612B

hello... i just acquired a new system (Athlon XP 1.4x Ghz, 512 Meg), which has a COMPAQ DVD-ROM SD-612B, and previously had Win 2000 on it but i chose to install XP Pro.

the DVD ROM is now not recognizing DVD's, but will recognize regular CD-ROM's. (i didn't test its DVD capabilities before the instalation of XP either)

suggestions on how to get the device to work properly?

I've never owned a DVD ROM before, and have had very little experience with their operation

do you have a suggested site (other than driverguide.com) where i might find help, or perhaps some other software that might do the trick to get this thing to work?

i'm feel so close, yet so far away from entering the world of DVD-ripping archives of my DVD catalogue!

thanks so much for pointing me to what seems be the most comprehensive one-stop for the firmware updates (a well organized site, w/ lots of info!)...

in my case, i'm trying to update f/w version BQ04 up to BQ07, but i can't seem to get the utility to flash the drive.

i'm running XP Pro, so to flash the drive, i tried to use the Win 98 DOS start up, and hit Shift+F5 to do a clean DOS boot.
when i run FLASH from the floppy, i'm told that the "download [is] successful" but nothing seems to change (using Benchmarx i can see what firmware version is installed on the DVD-ROM, and according to that utility, nothing changes, and the functionality of the drive does not change)

if i try to run the flash utilities from XP (yes, there's more than one utility out there for this drive), in every case, i get a "drive not found" error.

any suggestions for a successful firmware flash? am i missing a necessary step here?
