@ 13.30 a disc, if you're backing up a store bought DVD you're better off just buying another. I'm sure like everything else the more that come out the less they will be.

the article specifically says they price will be around $13.30 in "JAPAN." There are sites already offering DL media for about $5-$6 a pop, and those are the same MCC manufactured Verbatim disks. I may buy 5 at that price just to mess around with the DL format, but the price will drop even more in the upcoming months when more manufacturers introduce their DL media.

I wonder why the discs would be more in Japan since that's the area of the world they come from. You would think they would be more here after shipping across the Pacific. Plus the sign $ refers to dollars, not yen.

You got me but even at 5 bucks it's about 10x more than I pay for a Ritek 4x so I'll wait awhile until they have the speed up to at least 4x for the dual layer.

    thanks for the info.

  5. For $5 you better hope that every copy is perfect. The site I saw said you'd have to buy 100 to get that price.

A few economic factors about Japan that explain the price:

    1) Japan has next to no natural resources. Everything they use to make things has to be brought in.

    2) Japan's money is among the most valuable in the world. Ergo it is cheaper to just buy overseas than buy local produce.

    3) As a result of point two, everything in Japan is made for export. CDs, DVDs, toys, tools, you name it. They can purchase it locally, but nine out of every ten palettes are shipped out because it is easier on the economy that way.

So when these factors are all taken into account, I am not surprised DL media costs twice as much in Japan as it does anywhere else. The one factor that Japan uses to try and sway the populace to buy what little they do not export is the differences between Japanese products and what is made in the rest of the world. Hence, CDs have extra songs, DVDs have extra footage, and so forth. There are consumer formats in Japan that never see the light of day elsewhere.

That is not exactly the true story of the Japanese pricing structure.

All the latest devices are produced and marketed at home, for them, and they DO tend to leap at them.

If they go over well, they gear up for mass production, and export those same items for half the price.

The yen is not the controlling factor, as they will continue to export whether the yen falls or rises.

But, if it sells well over there, it will certainly sell over here, and at ridiculous price, I might add. AIBO come to mind, anyone? A 2500 buck pooch? Go buy a purebred real dog and breed it.

    Cheers,

    George

I would pay $100 a disc at this point. I got a BIG project!
Your miserable life is not worth the reversal of a Custer decision.
