Playing .avi-movie clips on a DVD-player?

Hello!
I don't really understand what divx is, but that's an other quiestion, I just wanted to say I'm not an expert.
My problem: I have some movie clips in .AVI and I want to burn them on a cd to watch on a DVD-player. Don't have a stand alone DVD-player, so I don't know what type to buy...
I was thinking of getting a player that supports DivX, and as I understand divx movies are created from avi-files? I just wonder if I can burn my avi-files as a data disc, and watch them on a DVD-player? Does it have to be a divx-player or does many DVD-players support AVI? I don't want to convert the avi-files to mpg or something, because the quality will probably be worse and it's quite much work...

If you do it right the quality is good. There are a lot of guides here that will describe how to convert divx and xvid to dvd. I don't know about stand alone divx players but they sound cool. If I purchased one from that would take all of the fun out of converting. Your right it is a lot of work. Try these guides,they are noob guides for converting divx to dvd.

Most (if not all) DivX encoded movies come in the AVI "container", so in a way you're right, but usually the process is to encode to DivX and put it in an AVI "container" together with the audio in one process.

Here's what you need to know:

Divx is a codec -- a method of compressing video to make it very small.

AVI is a file format. It can contain audio and/or video in any of many different formats. Divx compressed video is one of them.

More broadly, Divx, Xvid and MPEG4 are all variants of the MPEG4 compression scheme. Divx always comes in AVI files but some of the others have their own file formats.

Most DVD players will not play AVI files at all, including those with Divx video.

There are some DVD players that can play AVI files with Divx encoded video with varying amounts of success. These usually cost more than "regular" DVD players but the prices have been coming down. And yes, they can play Divx files on CD-R and CD-RW media.

I have a Liteon LVD 2002 which does a pretty good job. There's been a lot of talk lately of the Philips DVP 642 (630 in Europe) -- a very inexpensive player that can handle Divx files.

Divx files you download off the internet are of varying quality. They range from total crap to nearly DVD quality.

You can use the http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers link at this site to search for DVD players that can handle Divx files. Just check the "Divx/Xvid/MPEG-4" box.
