Why can a movie be re-authored without the extras and still have the menus work?

The question was WHY, not WHAT.

And a DVD can be reauthored that way because a DVD is an event driven medium. Unless you use something, nothing will happen.

its a simple answer...
if one removes the extra files [ie the .vob's of the extras] but leaves the .ifo's and .bup's un edited they will assume the dvd is in complete form and the menu will still load as if its a full dvd.

the problem comes when one tries to access levels of the menu that are not contained on the disk. Typically you will get an error, or a freeze or a smoking dvd player if you choose those options.

I do this all the time with my backups, just remove the extras, keep the movie and the menu. gives you scene selection and menu navigation but takes out the unnecessary extras info so your movie can look higher quality at 4.4 gigs.
