Quality of converted images. 1/2 DVD+R Vs 1 DVD+R

Hello everyone,
another question...
If I have a 700 mb .avi movie and want to burn it to DVD will it make much difference (in terms of picture quality) if I choose to convert the file to 2.2 GB rather than 4.3 GB. Obviously this may mean reducing the relative bitrate by appx. 50% (compared to the 4.3 GB alternative) but I asume that this bit rate should be succiciently high to maintain most/all of the original .avi's picture quality. After all, I will be nearly quadrupling the size of the original movie.
Also, can there be any compatability issues in burning images which only take up 50% of a DVD+R.

Using TMPEGEnc to convert the .avi to a DVD compatible .mpg file.

If you have a 7 GB avi and want to convert it to a 2.2 GB file that would be easy with TMPEGENC or any other. But if it's just a 700 MB file you'll have to put a lot of bitrate into it. Take a look at the How To section at the left.

It's the length of the avi that matters, not the size. Assuming you have a typical source of 1.5 - 2 hrs, then fravel made a good suggestion to use 1/2 DVD resolution (352x480). You can get up to 4 hours on a disk with pretty reasonable quality that way, even more if you use 2-pass VBR.

Using 1/2 a DVD is OK, but you could put two files on the same DVD.
