why does my writer take twice as long to burn a disc

Hi
I have a NEC nd-2500 and I am using nero 6.3.0.2

It burns discs fine but it takes around 24 mins to burn 4gig at 4x
and is only a few minutes faster at 8x
I have read a few reviews on this model and have seen figures of under 10mins for a full disc and I am not sure what I can be doing wrong.
Nero states that it is burning at 8x or 4x depending on what disc I use but I'm sure it shouldn't take so long.
What long should it be taking? and does anyone have any ideas?

Have you tried different software to create the disc?

Nero tends not to be too well liked on these forums (tho i cant fault it, yet!!)
