  1. When trying to upload videos from my camera, I'm only getting video feed and losing all of the audio track. I've used Roxio, Pinnacle, and DVgate programs, but no luck on any. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Do you have the sound wires plugged in correctly?

  3. I have one USB cord connected to my camera directly from the port. I'm not sure about an audio cord...

  4. The camera model by the way is DCR-TRV27.

I'm assuming you are using firewire, thus don't have separate sound wires. If otherwise, it could be many things.

make sure your volume is turned up (I know it sounds dumb, but this has happened to me. lots of frustration until I realized my volume had been turned down by my wife)

try another xfer prog (DVIO maybe)

make sure the sound actually exists on the tape by playing it back through the camcorder/TV.

Try manually extracting the audio from the AVI via VirtualDub or something. (in case your AVI playback software is acting up)

check codec needed against codecs installed on the PC.

    hope any of this helps.

  6. When using the DVIO software, what file would you select when you want to capture from your camera.

Use FIREWIRE and not USB ... assuming your cam is a Digital8 or DV cam. If it is analog (Video8 or Hi8) then you are better using the analog video and stereo audio out and a capture card/device such as the Canopus ADVC-100

  8. Can you explain how the firewire differs from a regular USB cord? Where does it hook up, etc...?

Would you also recommend a certain brand?

Firewire is just a different data transfer protocol, if you have a FW card on your PC then I agree, it is the best way to go.

When outputting data via FW, the audio is bundled into packets with the video and the file you end up with when running DVIO is an AVI file about 14GB per hour of video.

    A QUOTE FROM AMAZON.COM:

The TRV27 is equipped with the standard DV IEEE 1394 port (also known as FireWire) for a super-fast, lossless connection to a PC or other DV machines. The USB connection is used to transfer digital photos and MPEG movies. The traditional S-video and RCA connections are also present for direct viewing on a television or VHS dubbing.

so there you go, you can't xfer the DV video via USB. I would get the cheapest FW card available at your local store, I have found them to all be about the same. Most come with the cable as well.

  10. My camera and my computer are both equipped with the i-link ports, but my one concern is that I don't own a capture card. How would I know if I do own one, and if not, what brand what you suggest? My comp model is a PCV-RX660.

    i-link
    FireWire
    IEEE 1394

All three of those are names for the same thing.

Most computers have a FireWire port (most common name of the three). If your computer does not have that then you can buy a PCI FireWire card. These range in price from about $15.00 up to $50.00

Other than the FireWire port on your computer all you need is the FireWire cord.

Now you will be able to take the DIGITAL DATA on your camcorders VIDEO TAPE and TRANSFER it in DIGITAL FORM to your computer with NO LOSS in quality.

Thus the beauty of FireWire transfer over other methods such as USB

Of course this only applies to a Digital8 or DV cam

    *** EDIT ***
OK I just realized that you said you have i.link on both the cam and the computer. Done deal. Just get a FireWire cable. No "capture card" needed.
