picture to dark

could someone please help me ..

i have ripped a dvd with smart ripper.and converted to pal vcd which all went fine.but....

when i play the vcd on my puter or dvd player the picture is too dark.

can someone tell me how i can bring the grighness settings up at the copy stage?

Please give us some more details as to how you converted this movie. You luminence levels can be either compressed or expanded during such a conversion without you even being aware of it, and if you do so than the most common result is a picture which is too dark.

Are you using the typical dvd2avi->TMPGenc method? If so then set dvd2avi to RGB output and to pc scale. This should probably solve your problem.

yes i did use the exact mehod you mentioned ie:-

ripped with smart ripper ,then used dvd-avi.and then i used tmpge before burning with nero

not quiete sure how to achieve what your saying sorry to be a pain

See, pc's have a wider luminence scale than tv's do. Basically, they support both darker and brighter colors. So DVDs have their ranges compressed because if you didn't do so then when you played it on the tv those ranges would just be cut off. Now most of the software we use to backup DVDs gives you the option of extending or compressing the luminence ranges the problem is you have to know when to do so and by how much.

Just try using these settings I have posted in these pictures. These should work for TMPGenc's default settings. Make sure you don't accidentally have any luminence or color correction filters running on TMPGenc's advanced tab. Let me know if this fixes or even has any effect on the brightness problem you are seeing.
