maximum of 2.4X ripping speed with dvd decrypter

Hi,

This posting might have occured several times on this forum, my apologies for that.

I am a first time user of dvd decrypter and I have a problem.
When I try to rip a DVD the maximum speed is 2.4 X
Most of the time it's not more than 1x -1.5x.
I have tried to do stream processing in file mode, even in ISO mode but still no luck.
It even eats out my memory capacity (I suspect) because after 45 minutes and 60% of ripping, my pc crashes.

I have a Pentium 4 - 2Gig with 256Mb DDRAM and 60Gig harddrive.


Can anyone help me out on this one???

what type of drive are you ripping from - what's the make and model?

many drives are locked to only allow ripping at or near 2x - Sony drives are known for this. Many burner drives are locked as well.

Lite-On and Raite drives are not locked, I've reached 16x ripping on a 16x drive.

I have tried both NEC 1300 and a SAMSUNG SC-616T F303 DVD rom.
I am trying (and don't laugh, it's just a test) to rip a Disney DVD.

Additional info: I am using WIN98SE as OS.

I have the same Samsung drive and it isn't locked. right click my computer and select properties. go to the hardware tab and select device manager. open the IDE channels. right click on them and check the advanced tab. see what mode it lists you currently running in. the DVD drives (probably on the second channel) should be running is Ultra DMA 2. if it says PIO then windows XP (if thats what you are using) has switch it on you. Its a bug in the program. to fix is delete that IDE channel and it should prompt for a restart. when it restarts it'll redetect and force XP to try DMA mode again. that usually causes a lot of problems with slow rip speeds.

sorry missed a step. when you right click the IDE channel select properties and choose the advanced tab. forgive spelling, I have an injured hand that isn't working well.

I am not using XP but WIN98SE

But i sure can check whether the DVD is on UDMA....would that help you think?

I have checked the properties of my pc and found that DMA was switched off
I have switched it on, but same results here....fluctuating between 0.4x and 2x....

any other options???

Turn it on then re-boot.

Or more correctly delete it then re-boot.

Some DVDROMS simply dont' rip any faster. I took out my new drive that ripped at 2x and put an old used 8x in that, yeppers, rips at a max of 6.9x .

i have a NEC 1300a and using Decrypter it start rips at 1.9x and usually end up with 4.9x at the end of a rip. i have tried all the tricks (DMA setting, uninstall IDE controller, press eject button for 3 seconds) mentioned on this forum to increase the rip speed but cannot. does anyone have any other tips/tricks to increase rip speeds?
I also have a Lite-On 166 and the rip speed is no faster than mentioned above.

Have both of you installed Force ASPI and switched to ASPI under the I/O section in DVD Decrypter?

Between the pulling the IDE controllers and that it should get your speed up.

Try connecting the drive to another IDE channel,usually slave to HDD is fastest.

If I look in the settings of dvd decrypter under I/O I can see the option ASPI WNASPI32.DLL is turned on...is that what you mean?
Or do I have to change this?

Will an increase of the buffer (current setting 20Mb) help aswell?

Its quite normal! Ripping speed depends on the decoding of each movie and most recent Disney Movies ripped at low speeds. You can try some non-Disney movies see if they give you better speed. But bear in mind, movies are different in length and differently encrypted.

tried ForcedASPI but result was the same...still max rip speed is 4.9 at the late stage of the ripping process. Thanks anyway. back to ASPI471.
anyone with other suggestions please reply.

I've been trying for several months to figure out why my DVD burner won't work in DMA mode. However when I created a new boot partition with a fresh XP install it did use DMA. Just this morning I realized that this new partition did not have the driver for the Intel chipset installed. When I installed the driver the burner went from DMA mode to PIO.

A search indicated that the Intel Application Accelerator would fix the problem. You can find it here: http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/iaa/index.htm

After installing this it indicates that the drive is now in DMA mode. Strangely the Advanced tab is now missing in the Device Manager so I can't verify there. I won't be able to test the drive until later but this is something you can look into.

unfortunately i'm running AMD on my system that has the Lite-On which is on PIO. funny, only my 2 slaves are running DMA, with 2 masters on PIO. my CDR-burner is 2nd slave for I need the speed to burn. maybe I'll move the Lite-On to the slave of the primary
BTW the DMA/PIO setting can either be located under the drives or the controller sections. thanks again.

Dual layer disks are read a LOT slower than single layer disks

Here are some of my observations . I am using DVD Decrypter , Any DVD , and a Mad Dog 16X DVD ROM ( dont know who the drive is really made by ) . Ripping a dual layer disc to file mode takes about 15 to 20 minutes . Speed starts out at 2X and climbs to between 4 or 5 . Ripping a single layer disc to ISO image takes about 5 minutes . Speed starts out at about 1.5X and quickly climbs to 7X . From 7 it gradually climbs to about 15.8 . If you want to know what I'm running check my system specs .
