  1. I'm using DVDshrink to rip and Recordnow to burn. When I try to play the DVD -R on my stand alone DVD player, it plays but pauses up every couple minutes for a couple seconds. I burnt one movie on a DVD +R (the one that came with my burner) and it works just fine.

I have 3 possible causes that I can think of:

1.The DVD -Rs that I bought are Generic 2x, kinda crappy
2.Just the fact that they are DVD -Rs not DVD +Rs
3.My DVD burner (Liteon LDW 401S) was only meant to burn DVD+Rs but
I flashed the EEPROM and Firmware to a LDW 411S so that now it burns
    both.

I don't think it's 3. because I've heard nothing but sucess stories about people burning perfect DVD -Rs.

    Opinions please! thanks

Tiz most likely the media. Low quality cheapo blanks use low quality dye. Low quality dye degrades quickly and can result in skipping, incompatibility, or outright loss of video over time.

Try better media, ie; Maxell, Ritek, Phillips, Memorex

I use Maxell and Memorex DVD+R's and RW's and have encountered no compatibility issues at all on several stand-alones.

  3. Thanks, just orded 4 different samples from www.blankmedia.ca. I'm going to see what works best then get a 50 disk spindle of those.

For the meantime, I guess there's nothing I can do with the Generics hey?

You can always just store files on them. I still like to think that somewill come up with a way to increase their capacity.

    Stop wasting your time.

    Go to www.shop4tech.com

Find the Ritek Authentic 1x-4x (bundled by Ritek)...they are $124.00 for a 100 stack. Those are the RitekG04 discs.

BUY THEM and your media problems will be gone.

Really?? I've never had any problems at shop4tech....I must be one of the far and few betweens that has been lucky so far.

but anyway, point being...no matter where you buy them, just buy Ritek and your media issues will be over.

On 25 DVD+RW they sold me, NONE passed the dvdinfopro reading test. They all failed after 90%.

Even my maxwell DVD+RW fail on 1/5 the read test at the end of the media.

But you are right. RITEK GO4 is better quuality.

BTW: Princo is sh1t, Ritek is the only way to go. :P

I'll bet that the burn strategy for the DVD-R is all wrong. I've never heard that your could just "reflash" you burner to get it dual mode. Don't you think that the manufacturer would have enabled the dual burn capability (and charged more) if this was really possible?

Frankly, from what you have said, it doesn't sound like it is bad "-" media.

In this case it is possible. LiteOn released 401s as a +R burner, because obviously they had problems with -R part of software. Now the same drive with different firmware is sold as 411s. A lot of people flashed 401 to 411 and it works - only if one knows how to do it. And of course LiteOn doesn't like it.

In my opinion, both. It seems that LiteOn still has problems with -R part of firmware for 411s. BTW, watch their firmware website. And do not use cheap media. I tried different -R and so far only Sony gave me perfect result (one of my standalones is extremely picky).

I have different experience. Flashing itself is quite easy, but it takes a lot of time and experimenting to find proper software/media combination. In my case it is RecordNow DX burning software, Philips DVD+R and Sony DVD-R media, and FS07 firmware in my 411s. You may expect surprises when changing firmware: original 411s firmware gave better results with TDK -R media than FS07!

Well, if they are fuzzy or skip, you could always use them as coasters.
