  1. I have a new Sharp DV-RW2U DVD-R/RW recorder and I want to send video out of my dual G4 1.25 via firewire but the DVD rec doesn't "see" the vid. Is this just a function of the Sharp unit or am I going to run into this issue with any DVD recorder?

I plugged the firewire into my camera and I am getting the signal out to cam. And I did get random frame grabs to the Sharp DVD rec but not moving video. (I'm playing the video from Final Cut Pro 3.0.2)

I bought this DVD recorder because it was the only one at Fry's with firewire both IN and OUT. Lots of other brands have the FW IN but not OUT. I was told that the FW OUT wouldn't work to route the vid into my mac. So I doubted I could get the DVD-rec OUT to Mac via FW. But, suprisingly that has worked perfectly. Now I just can't get what I expected to be able to get ... Mac firewire OUT to DVD-rec.

Anyone have any insight on this?

    Thanks,

    - Nick

I would guess that the Firewire IN on your DVD recorder is designed to look for and control a MiniDV camcorder (i.e, a client device) and not a PC (or Mac). When it detects a device being attached, it will send out discovery packets asking what kind of device it is. If it doesn't recognise the device as something it can control then it will not accept streamed video data from it.

Basically, to get this work, you need some kind of program running on your PC or Mac that will simulate a MiniDV cam. AFAIK, no such thing currently exists.

  3. Combination: Philips DVDR 75/17 + Pinnacle Studio version 8, worked for me just fine. I was able record on burner from PC's firewire output.
