I've created a short 5 second 720x480 AVI to test playback compatibility on my Apex 1225. I loaded the NTSC SVCD template in TMPEG and generated a file, then loaded the unlock template and changed the resolution from 480x480 to 720x480 and generated a 2nd file. I then created a non compliant SVCD in Nero and tried the CDR-W in my player. The first video plays fine, the second is completely garbled but the sound is ok. Any suggestions what I might be doing wrong, or what I should check?

Here's where you went wrong. 720*480 is not a valid resolution for anything that a DVD player may be expected to play.
Take a look under "WHAT IS" for different valid resolutions to experiment with.
