  1. Hello all, I am looking for a christmas gift for mother and wanted to purchase a DVD player that will play my DVD-r and my SVCD's backups rather then giving here my originals (she is a great cook but DVD's, well she needs the DVD-r that I can replace if needed) I have looked at the player compatibility list but it is just too large to read all. Who can tell of a stable unit that will give her the least problems?

    If you're too freakin lazy to do any research of your own, and you are willing to take advice from a bunch of strangers on this forum, why don't you just go to a store, ask the salesman what will play DVD-R and buy that? If it doesn't work, return it and get something else, or go to another store.

  6. This is a forum geared directly at people who take dvd's and backup to svcd vcd dvd -+r/w and other formats just so they may play them on their home theater dvd players. My question is very relevent to this forum.

    I am seeking the advice of others and their experiences with respect to the above.

    If you think I havent already done some research on my own then your simply wrong. I have a Sony that plays nothing but comercial dvd and an Apex that plays EVERYTHING. Only problem with an Apex is you cannot leave it on for extended periods of time. That also was researched before purchasing 2 of them.

    Perhaps I misinterpreted your original statement. It sure read to me like you didn't feel like doing any research. Now that you have clarified that you indeed *have* done some research, maybe you should specify a price range.
    If price is no big deal, the DVD player that I own, a Pioneer DV563A, will play -Rs with no problems. It costs about $170 US. It has built-in AC-3 and DTS decoders. It also plays SACD and DVD-audio. All of that is probably overkill for your mother, judging from your comments. But as far as bang for buck goes, it's a good deal. The controls and the remote are straightforward. Beyond that, unless you are trying to surprise her with this, I still think maybe you should just take her out to a store and look at the models available, and see what she likes that will play DVD-R.

  8. Thank you,

    I do not buy anything without days weeks or even months of research as I like to buy what I already know will do what I expected it too. That being said DVD manufactures claim many things and they are simply not all true or compatibility problems arise from the programs speed and media we individually use to make our backups. Cost is not a factor but on the other hand I'm not looking to spend $ 500.00 for her as she is a simple woman with repects to watching a movie.

    Anyone else got any sugestions?

  9. I bought two DVD players from Amazon lately. They're Norcent DP-302V. They play my cheap DVD-R and DVD-RW, as well as JPG and MP3 disks. It's supposed to read VCD, SVCD, and everything else, but I haven't tried them. It's a smaller than standard players, very cute. The price is $59 with a $10 manufacrurer rebate. Your cost would be $49 plus tax. Mine came out to about $56.

    Please note that this player has a LCD display. Most other cheap players don't have an LCD player. You'd have to do with whatever shows on your TV screen. The LCD display is very convenient.

    Hope this helps.

    @DUKE107,
    What country do you live in?
    I ask because different countries sell different brands and models,that being said if you live in the US the Panasonic F65/F85 is a pro-scan 5 disk player that supports all formats including DVD-AUDIO.I have a F65(2 ch.) and it cost $115USD at Circuit City,the F85 costs $150 and supports 6 ch. DVD-AUDIO.

    Asking some 'kid' salesman that could care less because the company is paying him $6/hr isn't exactly a reliable source to go by!
