  1. Different thread since it's a different issue - although it could be seen as being a "two steps forward, one step back" sort of issue as well.

Anyway, I now am happily copying files off my internal HD to my external Firewire Bay with a HD tray docked in. My copy is finished, and I want to copy to my other HD tray so that I have a backup and can free up some space.

    What works so far:

    Shut XP down
    Shut drive bay off
    Replace tray
    Turn drive bay on
    Turn computer on

    What doesn't work so far:

My first thought was to use "Safely Remove Hardware" to take the drive offline. Can't do that. XP takes the bay offline as well.

OK, I figure, I'll replace the tray and turn it on and XP will realize I've switched things and reload the bay. Nope.

OK, I figure, I'll turn the bay off after removal, switch the tray, and then turn on the bay followed by the tray. Nope - that seems to lock up the system.

OK, I figure, I'll post to DVDRHelp and see if someone there can tell me what lame thing I'm doing that is causing this not to work (or how I'm misunderstanding what "Hot Swap" means in this case).

    TIA,
    Ewan

  2. 8) "hot swap" refers to the ability to remove a drive withoutshutting anything down. Normally used for raid disks. But a drive and drive enclosure must be specifically hot swappable to get this. you might need new drivers to achieve what you want. Or simply swap the drives and then goto control panel / device mgr / firewire? and refresh (f5).

strange bay -- external firewire drives are hot swapable of course ....

maybe you have to just pull the firewire off the back of it - then replace drive and plug it back in ..

kinda takes the fun out of it ..
