    All.

    If you include subtitles on a backup does this effect the compression rate or not.

    e.g are the subtitle element(s) a massive file

    If you refer to the "proper" DVD subtitle streams that are selectable, then no, the impact is negligible. The average size of a compressed (2-bit RLE) subpicture is around 2kB. So, for a movie with 1,000 subtitles, you end up with 2Mb for the subtitles.
