Cannot Record 2 hours mpeg2 into 1 DVDR

anybody know how can record 2 hours mpeg2 into 1 dvdr, since i use some software, those cannot record up to 2 hours movie into 1 dvdr. Just only one hour. but the cover of dvdr said 2 hours / 4.7G

Please tell us what software you are using(sounds like you are using mydvd)?
And how did you make the mpeg2?

I use Visual Studio 7

capture the dv into avi format and then encode into dvd mpeg2 format, that all.

the visual studio 7 state that the size of 1 hour + is nearly to 4.7gb , so it has not enough space to encode 2 hour into 1 dvd

Blanks DVDs will fool you. When they say 4.7Gbs, they mean in actuality ~4450mbs. Anyway, you'll need to encode the MPG2 using a lower bitrate. Try TMPGEnc with the DVD NTSC (or PAL) Low resolution template.

Here's how it works. You can put any amount of time on a DVDR that you want. But quaility might suffer. I don't use VS7 but MPEG file size is determined by two factors:

runtime x bitrate = fileszie

That is if you set a given runsize there exist a bitrate that will fill the disc. The problem is that whatever software you are using has set the bitrate to high.

Look to the left under Tools at bitrate calculators (the dvdrhelp.com java one is nice) and enter your source runtime and it'll tell you want bitrate to use.

Some of the 'cheaper/newbie friendly software' will not allow you change the bitrate. So you might have to use a different program to encode. Popular choices include TMPGEnc and CCE (as well as mainconcept and Ulead).

You could always just go ahead and create the video of 2 hours but instead of writing directly to a DVDR, create a DVD.ISO image file. Then you could user DVD Shrink or CloneDVD to make it fit on 1 DVDR. Thats how I did some of mine that were slightly over the 4450mb mark. I couldn't be bothered editing more or re-encoding the video so I did the above mentioned method and works well.

some softwares tries to make an actual dvd structure

for instance, i record a 2hr movie with wmvideo which too up 700mb (a cd basically)

i tried to burn the movie with neoDVD in uncompress mode (who need anymore compression with that movie)

well neodvd made it a 6 gig movie

i ended using TMPGEnc DVD Author to convert the movie for me
