    How can I burn a .avi to DVDR? Can anyone please point me towards a good tutorial.

    why do you want to burn an avi to dvdr? If you want to play it in a standalone dvd player then you must first convert it to dvd format. I believe that is mpeg2

    Unless of course he's archiving .avi files...or his standalone player can play divx files. If thats the case, then he needs to burn the files on the disc in ISO mode. If not he can take a look to the left in the green sections marked "CONVERT", "AUTHOR" or the "ARTICLES" section for newbie guides like this one here:
