Why is the Apex 500w a better XVCD player than a DVD player. Isn't it more difficult to construct a DVD player that can actually handle XVCDs properly (maybe not?)? However, the Apex 500w will skip on the audio quite frequently (and apparently this is not a drive issue b/c it would do this when using my other computer drives as well). Anyways, I have never had a problem with the Apex 500w playing XVCDs (although the video doesn't look as good as the Curtis Mathes, JVC, or DAEWOO).

...well, "a better XVCD player than a DVD player" isn't saying much. Because APEX players aren't even good XVCD players.

It boils down to the quality of the components. Quality of the DVD-ROM drive mechanism itself (some claim that a weak laser is at fault), the quality of the firmware, and the quality of the design. The Apex was designed to play a wide variety of disc formats. QUALITY of the playback was not a priority. VARIETY and PRICE were.
