Easy question about klh kd 1220 (easy easy easy)

Hi.

I just purchased this DVD player but I am thinking about returning it cuz it just doesn't work great with svcd.

Anyways my question is this. I have this dvd connected to my hauppage tv card and as well through rca into my vcr.

The picture is somewhat consistently dark (adjusting brightness has no effect on hauppage tv card menu).

Is this the result of Macrovision or some other defective component.

Note: Same effect my brother had while he had the playstation 2 hooked up to TV card.

is that macrovision also?
