I want to burn a movie to play on my DVD player. My DVD player plays vcd and xvcd but not svcd. What is the best way to encode a movie to give the best picture quality and can i get a movie to have good quality and still fit a 2 hour movie on two cds.

1) well...since SVCD is still higher quality than xVCD, you could try the VCD header trick. this sometimes works in tricking the dvd player into thinking the SVCD is a VCD and be able to actually play it. works on certain players that can't handle SVCD.Originally Posted by jordan456789

2) if that won't work...you have no choice but to go with xVCDs. first, look here for more info on your dvd player: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers
you need to find out the max bitrate your dvd player supports for xVCD. xVCD basically takes a standard, compliant MPEG1 VCD and makes it non-standard by 1) increasing the bitrate so that it can fill up the entire CD-R(s) 2) increase the resolution 3) uses VBR, instead of that horrible CBR.
3) good quality 2+ hr movie on 2 CD-Rs??? maybe...depends on what you consider as "good" quality. i personally can only stand SVCDs and DVD-Rs...., but you may not notice any quality difference if you have a smaller TV and/or the movie is a slow movie (i.e. no action, fast-moving scenes). this is because to fit a 2+ hour movie on 2 CD-Rs, you will need to use a bitrate of around 1.7 - 1.8 mbit/s. personally, i never encode below 2 mbit/s for SVCDs because of the decrease in quality, but again that depends on you, your TV, and the movie.
