PC doesn't recognize Burned DVD

I have VERY new to this, so please have patience...

I used DVD Decrypter to rip and then burn a commercial DVD-5. It took about 15 minutes to rip and 12 minutes to burn. After it was burned, it played fine in my stand-alone player (KLH-8360), but would not play (or even be recognized) in my PC. I couldn't even open up the drive in explorer...Windows just keeps saying "Insert a Disk".

I have a PC running Win XP Pro, a TDK IndiDVD 4X DVD+R burner using TDK 4X DVD+R disks.

If it matters, I also have Roxio 6.0 loaded, although I did not use it for this operation.

Any ideas as to how to get my PC to recognize the disk?

No problem, it is a simple fix. You need to set the region code for you DVD drive. You can do this simply by going to the device manager, and going to the properties of your dvd drive. Then select the DVD Region tab and set it for the appropriate Region. Region 1 is US. Once this is set, it should read just fine.

The copy won't have (or is extremely unlikely to have) any region coding on it. I'm not sure this is the problem here.

How old is the DVD-ROM drive ? I ask because my old DVD-ROM drive would not read recordable DVD's. Having recently replaced it my PC handles the media perfectly.

You don't say what you're playing it in - I'm assuming you're using a DVD-ROM drive and not the recorder. Have you tried playing the disc in the recorder, or is that what you're doing already ?

What program did you use to burn the DVDR?
Did you put all the DVD files into a VIDEO_TS folder then burn that folder?

If your windows explorer won't even recognize that there a DVD disc at all in the DVD-ROM, it's most likely that the DVD-ROM can't read DVD-Rs. if it was a media problem or authoring problem, at least the DVD-R will show up in some form in windows explorer, even though winDVD or powerDVD may not play it.

did burn full disk or movie only??? cuz when i burn movie only cuz its too large to put the full disk on the dvdr the dvd rom wont read it as a real dvd but if i burn the full disk it will read it fine in the dvd rom if this is the problem ur having just put it in the dvd burner and it will read it fine but it will take long to rerip it if u have too

garryheather even if it is set region free, if it has any region information on it, DVD roms are designed not to read discs until the region is set on them. Usually this requires playing one comercial disc to cure, or you can simply set the region code manually. Once this is done, I am confident the drive will read the disc.

I almost positive this is a region problem. This has been documented on numerous occasions. One being on Sony's web page. Here is the link

I have not set the region code in XP as you describe and it everything works as expected - I can only speak as I find !

So you are saying that you have NEVER played a commercial DVD with a region code set on it? As stated in my post If you play a commercial DVD in your DVD rom that has a region code set, it will Automatically set the region.

Thanks for all of your tips, everyone. I don't know how I fixed it, but I downloaded PowerDVD, rebooted the machine, and everything worked fine.

Dun4cheap - of course I've played commercial DVD's on it.

The Region parameters in the control panel on my machine clearly states "Not Selected", with 2 region changes available.

Maybe it's got something to do with my DVD-ROM being region free in the first place and using DVD Genie for PowerDVD. But as I say, I have never set the region under XP and I have no problems.
