ffmpegX error message

I get the following error message in ffmpegX when opening a video from DIVXDoctor:

can't open '/Users/harddrive/.mplayer/codecs.conf': No such file or directory
can't open '/usr/local/etc/mplayer/codecs.conf': No such file or directory
File not found: 'frameno.avi'
: No such file or directory (1)


What does it mean? I have mplayer installed.

Here's my problem du jour.

I'd like to go from .mov to DivX.

My sample source is the "Bend It Like Beckham" movie trailer. The trailer does not play in mplayer (installed with 0.0.7c). Is it the Sorenson codec?

That codec is not currently supported. Export it to MJPEG with Quicktime player. Also try "fast DivX" preset.

I don't find MJPEG as an export option in Quicktime.

Actually, it's "Movie to Quicktime Movie", then options, then video settings, then "Motion JPEG A".

The problem with this method is that it inflates the movie hugely, so when you subsequently convert to DivX, the result is about the same size as the original .mov file. Another exercise in futility.

If the source movie inflates in size, this doesn't mean the encoded movie will inflate in size too.

I just tested with a 1-minute source clip in MJPEG format being 170MB. The encoded result to mencoder-mpeg4 with a bitrate of 990 is correctly 7MB as follows:
