Does using a 16X DVD-ROM = 16X ripping?

I have my old trusy Toshiba 1202 DVD-ROM that I had when I bought my Dell back in 98..i think its like a 4x drive and i can rip at about 2-3x.

If I get a 16x drive does that mean Ill be ripping at or near 16x?

nope, the 16X is the read rate, not ripping rate.

my 16X samsung will rip on average of about 6-8X, with spikes up to 11-12X

And alot of drives are locked and can only rip at 2X.

Liteon isn't locked, but you won't get 16x ripping speed from a 16 x drive...

I get performance like what "orbital517" said above, the overhead as it susses out the keys and such slow it down and single layer rip faster than dual layer disks too.

But it beats a drive that is locked at 2x ripping like many are. My Sony burner would only do 2X rips. The old BTC (??) would do little better but not much. Liteon 16X much faster!

same here - my 16x Lite-On averages about 7x, with the occasional spike to 9x.

remember that 16x is a maximum, not an average, rating for your drive.

Although I do have a Raite 8x in another machine and on some discs I reached 8x ripping with it...

I have three 16x DVD-ROMS and they all rip at the same speed. A dual-layer disk of 7-8GB's in 16 minutes. Ripping speed is misleading. It's really the data transfer rate that matters. Much depends on how your computer is setup,is DMA transfer turned on,did change your file system to Network Server?

rips dvd9 @ 7-8X

rips dvd5 @ 14-15X

My Liteon 16X Starts at around 7X and gets faster through the outer layers up to about 11X. My Asus 8X is lucky to get to 5X.

I seem to be able to get 16x rip speeds fine



Dual layer is anywhere up to 8x. I did spend a lot of time tweaking it tho. Got the lastest firmware and removed my ide controller and rebooted. Also i downgraded my aspai driver to x.6 that helped.

My Lite-On XJ-HD166s does 7-8 on DVD-9 and goes up past 15x towards the end of DVD-5. It takes about 5 or 6 minutes for a DVD -5 and about 10 for a DVD-9.

My Plextor PX-708A will burn up to 14x if I hold down the eject button and wait 5 seconds. It's some trick I learned. It actually works..

I think you mean rip at 14x I hope LOL.

My Lite-On 811 rips much better than my Pioneer 104, locked at 2x. 811 goes up to 8-10x.

Ripping speed also depends on ripping method:ISO is fastest,then IFO and slowest is File.Ripping software does make a small differance in speed,I found DVDDecrypter to be the fastest.
