What are you trying to capture using the HD-PVR 2?

What are you using to record the output from the HD-PVR 2? The Mac?

What else is connected to the monitor's HDMI port? The Mac?

Since you like hockey, I will assume you are in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

To record the HDMI output from the PS3, you need this to avoid problems with HDCP: http://www.amazon.ca/ViewHD-HDMI-Splitter-1x2-1080P/dp/B004F9LVXC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1427425200

Assuming that the Mac has its own screen, these are the connections that you need to make:

1: PS3 HDMI to ViewHD 2 Port 1x2 Powered HDMI Mini Splitter HDMI in

    2. ViewHD 2 Port 1x2 Powered HDMI Mini Splitter HDMI Out 1 to monitor.

    3. ViewHD 2 Port 1x2 Powered HDMI Mini Splitter HDMI Out 2 to HD-PVR HDMI in.

    4. HD-PVR 2 USB 2.0 to Mac USB 2.0

The PS3 uses HDCP for video games, so yes, you need to use that splitter or another splitter which is known to remove HDCP as a side effect. HDMI capture devices won't record an HDCP-protected HDMI signal.

The XBox One and XBox 360 consoles don't HDCP protect video games, so if you were recording video games played on an XBox console, you wouldn't need the splitter. You would just connect XBox;s HDMI to the HD-PVR 2 HDMI in, and connect the monitor to the HD-PVR's HDMI out.
